We are delighted to announce that our petition calling on the UK Government to launch a public inquiry into the impact of Section 28 is now live on the official UK Parliament petitions website.
Section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988 banned Local Authorities from intentionally promoting homosexuality or same-sex relationships as a 'pretended family relationship'. For fifteen years, until its repeal in 2003, it had a profound and damaging impact on LGBTQ+ people in schools, libraries, health services, and the arts.
We believe the harm caused by this legislation has never been properly acknowledged, and a public inquiry is the first step towards justice for all those affected. A public inquiry would also identify ways in which to stop anything similar happening again.
How you can help right now
The most important thing you can do is sign and share our petition. We need 10,000 signatures to receive a government response, and 100,000 to be considered for a parliamentary debate.
Please share it with friends, family, colleagues — anyone who might sign. Every signature counts.
Who can sign?
The petition is open to UK citizens and UK residents. If you live outside the UK, you can still help by sharing it with people who are eligible to sign.
What happens next?
We are still in the early stages of our campaign. Over the coming months we will be raising awareness, collecting evidence and testimonies, and lobbying politicians. We will keep you updated on our progress — sign up to our mailing list below to stay in the loop.
Thank you for your support.
